Newsletter - May 28, 2020

Dear MARVEL'ers,

Please find below our latest newsletter, with highlights, news, and events linked to the MARVEL community.

This month, read about the major reengineering of Materials Cloud Archive. Based on the CERN-developed data technology that also drives the massive Zenodo repository, the new archive improves the user experience, permits the scaling needed to accommodate the growing number of submissions and helps moderators and developers focus on the core work of the archive — enabling the seamless sharing and dissemination of resources in computational materials science. You can also meet new additions to the NCCR MARVEL team — Prof. Sereina Riniker, a new PI from ETHZ, as well as Joanna Stoycheva, an INSPIRE Potentials fellow in the lab of Prof. Nicola Spaldin, also at ETHZ.

For your calendars, there’s the MARVEL Junior seminar tomorrow, May 29. Sadly, the Psi-k conference has been postponed to August 2021.

Be well and keep in touch. We look forward to seeing you soon.

New Materials Cloud Archive offers easier submission and record management for authors

After nearly 18 months of planning and programming, the team behind the new Materials Cloud Archive has unveiled a major reengineering based on the CERN-developed data technology that also drives the massive Zenodo repository. The new archive improves the user experience, permits the scaling needed to accommodate the growing number of submissions and helps moderators and developers focus on the core work of the archive—enabling the seamless sharing and dissemination of resources in computational materials science.

MARVEL Junior Seminar — May 2020

May 29, 2020, from 14:00 until 15:00, Zoom

While we sadly cannot host MARVEL Junior Seminars in person for the time being, nor interact in the auditorium and around pizza and cakes (but we’ll hopefully be back soon!), we would like to continue the MARVEL Junior Seminar series in videoconferencing mode for the time being. We are therefore pleased to announce the 32nd MARVEL Junior Seminar: Sophie Beck (Materials Theory Laboratory, ETHZ) and Ravi Yadav (C3MP, EPFL) will present their research. The seminar will be chaired by Stefano Falletta.

Meet Sereina Riniker, new MARVEL PI

NCCR MARVEL Agility Plus grants are targeted at new junior PIs, particularly women, to help support either experimental or theoretical research that can be integrated into existing MARVEL projects.  The grants will support a PhD student or half a postdoc between May 2020 and April 2022.  As communicated previously, the latest round of funding has been granted to four projects covering topics ranging from machine learning in the sampling of crystal packing to topological materials with intrinsic magnetic ordering, and led by Prof. Sereina Riniker, Dr. Emiliana Fabbri, Prof. Marta Gibert and Prof. Ana Akrap (from left to right in the image below).

Today, learn more about Sereina Riniker.

Psi-k conference postponed to August 2021

Psi-k conference

Aug 22, 2022, 14:00 until Aug 25, 2022, 18:00, SwissTech Convention Center, EPFL

Psi-k 2022 is the 6th general conference for the worldwide Psi-k community. Typically held every 5 years, this event is the largest worldwide in first-principles simulations. With more than 1000 participants attending the past 2010 and 2015 editions, it promises to be the most exciting, defining event in the field, offering an intense but enjoyable atmosphere, in addition to a chance to explore the beautiful region around Lausanne and Lake Geneva.

INSPIRE Potentials – MARVEL Master's Fellowships

These fellowships are developed to empower excellent female students to pursue a career in a field of science where women are still strongly underrepresented. They consist of a 6-month 12'000 CHF fellowship (+ 500 CHF for travel + separate coverage of tuition fees and medical insurance (for non EU participants)). The yearly application deadlines are on 15 April and 15 October.
