This month, read about a new method for modelling alloys containing up to 25 transition metals, matching a remarkable accuracy with a manageable requirement of data and computational resources. You can also learn more about the research of MARVEL Prof. Schüler, with a study where ultra-short and strong light fields were used to directly observe how Floquet bands form in a crystal. 

Mark your calendars for a series of MARVEL events in the next weeks, with seminars by Prof. Zhiting Tian (Cornell) on June 2, Andrew Briggs (Oxford) on June 16, a Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Emmanouil Kioupakis on June 20, as well as a Junior Seminar on June 29.

Research highlight

Using alchemical compression and machine learning to describe high-entropy alloys

A new method developed by the NCCR MARVEL laboratory of Michele Ceriotti at EPFL allows modelling alloys containing up to 25 transition metals, matching a remarkable accuracy with a manageable requirement of data and computational resources. The group validated the model and used it for computational experiments on three representative alloy compositions. In the future the model will be expanded to predict the catalytic behaviour of the surfaces of high-entropy alloys.

Introducing Prof. Schüler's research

When electrons dress up in light

Professor Michael Schüler of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) joined NCCR MARVEL in Phase III, and is now a Group Leader in the “Advanced Simulation Methods” project. To highlight the expertise he brings to NCCR MARVEL, we repost a recent story from the PSI website, about a study he co-authored in Nature. In this study, ultra-short and strong light fields were used to directly observe how exotic energetic states, so-called Floquet bands, form in a crystal. 

Women in Materials

New portraits added to the “Women in Materials” artwork at EPFL

The installation, on display since 2018 in the entry hall of the Institute of Materials (IMX), has been expanded and updated with the addition of two more faculty members, and now showcases twelve EPFL professors active in the field of materials science.

Joint MARVEL-QSE seminar: Andrew Briggs

This seminar, hosted jointly by MARVEL and EPFL's Centre for Quantum Science and Engineering (QSE), will feature Andrew Briggs, Professor of Nanomaterials at the University of Oxford. He will be giving a presentation entitled: "Accelerating quantum technologies with machine learning".

The 35th NCCR MARVEL Distinguished Lecture will be given by Prof. Emmanouil Kioupakis, University of Michigan. He will be presenting a lecture entitled: "Advancing the state of the art in semiconductor technology through predictive atomistic calculations: from uncovering fundamental limitations to discovering new materials."

The MARVEL Junior Seminars aim to intensify interactions between the MARVEL Junior scientists belonging to different research groups.  We are pleased to propose the 52nd MARVEL Junior Seminar: Giovanni Piccioli (Statistical Physics and Computational Lab, EPFL) and Anooja Jayaraj (nanotech@surfaces lab, Empa) will present their research.

This is the second school on the topic after a very successful and exciting first edition held (virtually) in 2022 and it benefits from the support of the NCCR MARVEL.
