MARVEL topical sessions at the SPS-ÖPG meeting

Aug 21, 2017, 9:00 until Aug 25, 2017, 17:00, CERN, then Centre International de Conférences de Genève (CICG) in Geneva

MARVEL organizes topical sessions on “Correlated-Electron Physics in Transition-Metal Oxides” and on “Emergent phenomena in novel low-dimensional materials” at the Joint Annual Meeting of the Swiss and Austrian Physical Societies (SPS-ÖPG 2017), to be held in Geneva on August 21-25, 2017.

The meeting is organized - as every two years - as a joint meeting with the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG) and the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy (SSAA). The Swiss Institute of Particle Physics (CHIPP) will participate additionally to their usual 2-year rhythm. The NCCR MARVEL is involved this year for the first time. Both partners guarantee an exciting conference covering physics at its best.

The first session on “Correlated-Electron Physics in Transition-Metal Oxides”  will focus on the experimental and theoretical aspects of the interplay between orbital, spin and lattice degrees of freedom in this class of materials, as well as in novel developments enabling their control. The presentations will cover  advances in synthesis, characterization, design and property control of thin film, heterostructures and bulk oxide materials, as well as novel theoretical methods for the description of correlated electrons and for functional oxide design.
The following invited speakers have already confirmed their participation:
- Eva Benckiser, Max Plank Institute, Stuttgart, Germany
- Nicholas Plumb, Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland
- Oleg Peil, Ecole Polytechnique Palaiseau, France

This session is co-chaired by Marco Gibertini and Oleg Yazyev.

The second session on “Emergent phenomena in novel low-dimensional materials” will focus on recent experimental and theoretical efforts in the discovery of novel low-dimensional materials, where the combined effect of quantum confinement and reduced screening enables emergent phenomena and unprecedented functionalities, with particular emphasis on the design and characterization of electronic, optical, and topological properties.
The following invited speakers have already confirmed their participation:
- Roman Fasel, Empa, Dübendorf, Switzerland
- Alberto Morpurgo, Université de Genève, Geneva, Switzerland

This session is co-chaired by Claude Ederer, Antoine Georges and Marisa Medarde.

Deadline for abstract submission has been extended to Tuesday May 30, 2017.

Deadline for registration is Tuesday, August 1, 2017.
